Entrance Examination for a Study College
What is a Study College?
Study colleges („Studienkollegen“) are state educational institutions at which foreign applicants are prepared for academic study at a German university.
Attendance of a study college is intended for those foreign applicants whose results and educational qualifications are not recognised as equivalent to the German „Abitur“. The qualification recognition office of the chosen university decides whether a study college must be attended.
Training at a Study College
The students at a study college, known as „Kollegiaten“ are prepared for university study in a two semester subject specific course.
In addition to the obligatory German courses, the college students learn key skills which may be helpful to them in accomplishing the study of their chosen subject. Among these are, for example, the taking of structured notes during lectures, the presentation of report results, working with text sources and composing seminar papers.
A test is written at the end of the course which assesses whether the participants are suitable for university study in Germany („Feststellungsprüfung“).
The Entrance Examination for a Study College
In order to apply for a place at a study college, German competence must be proven to be between level B1 and B2, depending on the institute. The respective entrance requirements are mostly tested in the form of an entrance exam.
