If you would like to study at a German university, but your school-leaving certificate is not recognised as equivalent to the German abitur, then this programme could be the alternative you're looking for.

Over the course of a year foreign students are prepared both academically and in language skills to begin their studies. The study preparation programme is a co-operation between the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences and the Institut für Sprachen. Its successful completion entitles you to take up your studies at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. Over the first two trimesters German language training is held at the Institut für Sprachen in Kassel. In the third trimester students undergo academic study preparation at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. Depending on your area of study you will receive instruction either in a technology course (T-course) or an economics course (W-course, German: 'Wirtschaft'). The year ends with an admission exam (if need be, an external exam) which entitles you to begin your course of study in your preferred field at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences.

Overview of the course structure and programme content

The programme is currently divided into three trimesters. The focus of the first two trimesters in Kassel lies on participants' language preparation. The goal is to fulfill the entrance requirements of the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences by successfully completing language courses in German and English and passing the official German and English language tests: TestDaF and TOEIC.

The third trimester then focuses on the participants' academic preparation. Subject teaching takes place at the Schmalkalden University in a W-course and a T-course. Once the subject course has been successfully completed and the related university admissions exam passed, studies may be commenced in the winter semester. On admission to the academic preparation course at Schmalkalden in the summer semester, the university semester fee becomes due.  The university semester fee currently amounts to € 95,90 (July 2016). On payment of the semester fee, participants are entitled to occupy a room in a university residence in Schmalkalden, to eat in the university canteen at affordable rates, to take part in most university sports for free, make use of the regional trains throughout Thuringia for free and much more.
